This recipe for Low Carb Air Fried Chicken should make anyone on a low carbohydrate diet happy.
I like that it can be made in an air fryer as well!

Low Carb Air Fried Chicken

Think of this recipe as fried chicken for the person who does not want to consume a bunch of carbohydrates.
Also, this recipe is for anyone who wants their fried chicken but, without all of the frying.

Personally, I am not a fan of all of the grease that comes with anything that has been fried.
This is because I hate the feeling that fried food leaves me with after I have consumed it. As a result, I must admit, that it has been a really long time since I have eaten anything fried.

Air fryers are the perfect kitchen accessory in my opinion.

I mean, for under one hundred bucks you can have a healthy method of cooking just about anything. After I first started using an air fryer I gave one to just about everyone that I love for a holiday gift. Air fryers are certainly a healthy way to cook (or bake) and thus, a healthy gift to give to someone that you love.

A while back I mentioned that I was ready to move on to the next level of air fryers.
That next level would be to try out the air fryers that are also a toaster oven. I was pleasantly surprised (and very grateful!) at the feedback and recommendations that I received from my readers.

Getting back to the chicken, this is one food that is allowed on so many different diets.

Chicken is low in carbohydrates, low in calories, low in fat and has a decent amount of protein in it. Of course, I am referring to the skinless boneless breast of chicken when I say this. You are free to use the chicken part of your choice in this recipe.

I also like that there are so many ways to prepare chicken.
While you could enjoy your chicken as it is in this recipe, 'breaded' and air fried, you could also eat it grilled, baked or broiled.
It is not wonder why chicken is so popular when you consider its flexibility.

What makes this fried chicken recipe unique really has to be that it is low in carbohydrates.

As you probably already know, fried chicken does come with carbohydrates that have been added to the recipe. Those carbs come from the breading that covers the chicken.

Breading on fried anything is usually made from bread crumbs (Panko) or a similar kind of breading.
However, there are low carbohydrate substitutes for bread crumbs, you can buy low carb bread crumb alternatives online. Another option would be to make your own low carb bread crumbs using low carb bread by toasting the bread on a low heat (120 for 35-40 minutes) until hard and then grinding them up by hand or in a blender or food processor.

You will also need a flour alternative for this recipe.

You can find low carb flour (not baking mix)choices online. I like to use Carbalose low carbohydrate flourfor my low carb baking.

  • To make this we are going to set up a dredging station using three shallow bowls. For the first bowl whisk or blend together the flour and the seasoning. Place the eggs in the second bowl. In the last bowl place your bread crumbs.
  • Meanwhile, lightly prep the basket of your air fryer for nonstick (optional) and preheat the air fryer to 360 degrees.
  • To coat the chicken, do this one piece at a time. You can do this in batches as you will be baking the chicken most likely in tow batches. Dredge each individual piece of chicken, one at a time, in the flour bowl and shake off the loose flour. Then drag that piece of chicken into the egg (allow excess to drip off) and then into the bread crumbs. You may need to pat or press the crumbs into the chicken.
  • Bake the chicken for done- 12-15 minutes. The chicken should reach 165 degrees and be no longer pink. Repeat the process until all of your chicken is done.

FAQs

Why is my air fryer not making my chicken crispy? ›

Dry the outside of the food properly before you add oil. Do not use too much oil, as this will make the food less crispy and more fattening. Meat or poultry can be lightly brushed with oil or marinated to get the crispiest results.

Can a diabetic eat air fried chicken? ›

Is it possible to make fried chicken diabetes-friendly? Absolutely! Especially if you have an air fryer. This small appliance "fries" food with hot circulating air, so you can create the crispy, crunchy exterior or frying with a fraction of the fat and calories from traditional deep frying.

How to make crispy in air fryer? ›

However, a small amount of oil is usually necessary to achieve a crispy texture. A drizzle or a quick oil spray is all you need for restaurant-quality fries and golden brown fried chicken, while other foods don't need any oil, like pizza or leftovers you might reheat.

Does air fried chicken taste as good as fried chicken? ›

Taste-wise the air fried chicken and deep fried chicken are quite similar, but I do think the oilier deep fried version carries the flavor of seasoning better and results in a crust that is crispy but with some oily, flavorful bubbling.

What is the best temperature to air fry chicken? ›

After testing a variety of temperatures, I found that 375 degrees F is the best temperature for air frying chicken. Because the air fryer uses convection heat, you do not need to set it as high as you would an oven (in a regular oven, 425 degrees F is best for baking chicken, like Bacon Wrapped Chicken Breast).

Will fried chicken spike your blood sugar? ›

Fried chicken is a high-calorie, high-fat food. When we consume fried chicken, our body breaks down the carbohydrates and fats from the food into glucose, which enters the bloodstream and raises blood sugar levels. The process of frying can also alter the protein in the chicken.

Do chicken wings spike blood sugar? ›

While the wings themselves don't contain any carbs, the protein they contain can still impact blood sugar levels to some extent. The protein will break down and be metabolized into some sugar, resulting in a delayed blood sugar spike, especially when combined with the higher fat content of the wings.

Can diabetics eat popcorn? ›

Popcorn offers people with diabetes a low-sugar, low-calorie snack option. It will not increase a person's blood sugar levels by a significant amount, making it a safe choice between meals. However, people should keep toppings to a minimum and avoid eating excessive portions.

What is the secret to the air fryer? ›

Cook food in a single layer, in batches

The air fryer is all about — well — air. Meaning, you need to allow for good airflow to create all the browning and crisping the appliance was designed for. As such, you don't want to crowd the food in the basket too much, leaving space for the air to circulate.

Why are people getting rid of air fryers? ›

And because they also use little to no oil compared to other traditional cooking methods, they're also seen as a healthy alternative. But now, shoppers have been ditching their air fryers in favour of a different gadget that's said to be even cheaper - and even healthier - when it comes to preparing meals.

Is it OK to air fry raw chicken? ›

Yes. You should pat the chicken dry if it is wet coated to avoid excess moisture. Please be aware of the danger in eating raw chicken and make sure it is cooked safely. Using an instant-read thermometer and letting the chicken reach the internal temperature of at least 165 degrees Fahrenheit will ensure safety.

Why doesn t my food stay crispy in air fryer? ›

It is vital to follow this advice. If you want your fried foods to be crispy, you'll want to make sure you don't overfill the basket. The greater the accumulation of food that can heat up and melt, the more likely it will stick in the air fryer. It will also prevent food from becoming crispy and browned.

Why is my chicken not crisping? ›

If your oven temperature is too low, the chicken may steam instead of crisping up. Make sure to preheat your oven to the recommended temperature (usually around 400°F to 425°F) and bake the chicken on a high rack to allow air circulation around the chicken.

Why is my air fried chicken so dry? ›

Chicken breasts should be cooked to 160°F, but if you cook them all the way to that temperature in the air fryer, carryover cooking will take them beyond that temp and cause them to dry out. Stop the cooking five degrees sooner and let carryover cooking do the rest.

Why is my air fryer chicken soggy? ›

Not patting food dry

Moisture is an air fryer's biggest enemy as it will cause steam and reduce the crispiness of the food. To encourage browning and crispiness, pat dry anything that is unbreaded before cooking, such as meat, fish or vegetables.
